Friends Committee on National Legislation Report
The Most Effective Peace-Oriented Lobby in Washington
Report on annual meeting of Friends Committee on National Legislation, November 11-14, 2010, Washington DC
Submitted by Thomas S.
Approximately 200 friends from around the US attended the meeting. Attendess from ILYM: Wilmer R., Oak Park Monthly Meeting; Thomas S., Evanston Monthly Meeting of Friends
1. The FCNL has chosen a new Executive Secretary, Diane Randall, who comes from the Hartford CT Friends Meeting.
2. The meeting approved the FCNL Priorities for the 112th Congress. These are:
I. We seek a world free of war and the threat of war.
II. We seek a society with equity and justice for all.
III. We seek a community where every person's potential may be fulfilled.
IV. We seek an earth restored.
3. Concentrated attention was dedicated especially to reducing the military budget, ratification of the new START treaty, and peaceful prevention of deadly conflict. FCNL lobbyists spoke hopefully about the possibility of reducing the military budget.
4. Of immediate concern for Illinois friends: Even before taking office, Senator-elect Mark Kirk has already announced his resistance to ratification of the START treaty. The FCNL urges Illinois friends to contact Senator-elect Kirk’s office as soon as possible to urge him to support START ratification. As he is changing offices, he cannot be reached by email. Instead faxes, letters, and phone calls are urged: Fax: 202-225-0837*
